David Oliver: Reducing emergency admissions from care homes

The Health Foundation recently published a report on emergency hospital admissions from care homes. The analysis, coproduced with NHS England, found that 41% were for “potentially avoidable conditions,” such as respiratory infections, pressure sores, and urinary tract infections. It estimated that one in every 12 patients admitted to emergency wards is a care home resident—around 192 000 a year.
